Cyberpunk 2077 dev defends Starfield

Cyberpunk 2077 Developer Defends Starfield

The sci-fi RPG Starfield is proving to be a big hit for Bethesda Game Studios. However, not everyone is impressed by all aspects of the game. One Twitter user posted a video negatively comparing it to CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, prompting a Cyberpunk developer to defend Starfield.

Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077 are both big AAA sci-fi RPGs, so it’s natural that people will compare them. A Twitter user recently uploaded a compilation video showing actions in Starfield followed by the same action in Cyberpunk 2077. These included things like jumping into water and firing weapons around NPCs. Starfield’s water physics was less impressive, with Cyberpunk having more realistic splashes and ripples. Additionally, Cyberpunk 2077 NPCs run away when the player fires a gun while Starfield NPCs show no reaction at all.

Cyberpunk 2077 quest designer cirtcises Starfield video

Cyberpunk 2077 senior quest designer Patrick Mills found this a little amusing, given similar videos were used to criticize CDPR’s game. However, that doesn’t mean he thinks it is a fair comparison. “Tbc this fake criticism is actively harmful to the way the audience interacts with the medium and I hate it,” wrote Mills, “but it’s very funny to see after how many hundreds of these were made to ridicule cp2077.”

Another Twitter user responded that it is still odd that Starfield doesn’t feature swimming as part of its planetary exploration mechanics. However, Mills disagreed that the video was making a deeper point. He pointed out the lack of commentary and questioned the point of the comparison: “How does this relate to how I should feel about or experience these games?” According to him, this is a comparison that adds nothing to the conversation around Starfield.

Mills didn’t give his personal opinion about Starfield, though most people seem to like the Skyrim studio’s newest RPG.
